Football Stuff

Can I safely say that my anthem during football season is the Sunday Night Song? "The NFL Rocks on NBC" is the best, truly. Even when the Colts will be playing (whom I seriously dislike) that song will make me start dancing around the living room, arms flailing, ready for a big night game. Tonight's lyrics perfectly reflected the playoff games.

So...my first prediction was wrong; the Seahawks won in a surprising matchup with the Super Bowl Winning Saints of last season. I immediately called friends in Seattle to whoop and holler in joy.

Now for the kickoff.

SLIS at SJSU and Playoff Weekend

You can see Nickleby on the futon, and the red pillow on the floor with the laptop
on the coffee table. He's not working too hard, huh?

A new year has begun; what better way to get started than to begin graduate school? I'm beginning my coursework at San Jose State University (obviously completely online as I live in New England) and I couldn't be happier. So far, even before the official semester has begun, students are required to take LIBR 203: Online Social Networking: Technology and Tools. My first impressions? Very comprehensive, easy to understand, clear directions, and responsive instructors.

I've had an adjustment period getting used to the self-discipline portion. I kept trying to work at the dining room table, but soon realized this was a hub of poodle activity, and cooking, and everything else that goes on here! Now I'm comfortably set up in my study, on a coffee table with a floor chair, a few lit candles, yoga meditation music playing in the background, poodles snoozing behind me on the futon, and all the world is good.

Had a bit of delay when mom headed to the hospital Thursday night. I took off Friday from work to be at her bedside. Luckily, she is recovering nicely and on her way home this afternoon.

Looking forward to the playoffs this weekend, so I need to get some more schoolwork done! I'm routing for Seattle (where I used to live) to beat New Orleans, but I don't think it will happen. Then I'm picking the Jets over the Colts, just because I'm no fan of Indianapolis and Peyton Manning. But to be honest, the way the Jets trash talk the Patriots, they're not my best option either. Tomorrow, I'm picking Kansas City over the Ravens, and Philly over Green Bay. Are you ready for some football?! I am!

Nickleby is a Miracle Boy!

You couldn't believe how sick this guy was. This photo was taken of Nickleby only a few weeks before he grew ill. It all began on a Friday night, July 30th, with a reluctance to sit or walk up the stairs. I carried him up to our bed, and by midnight, he wouldn't move on his own. When we tried to move him, he cried horribly. Scooping him on a sheet, we rushed him to the emergency vet hospital in Newington. By this time, his eyes were bloodshot and lesions were spreading all over his body. We were horrified. He stayed overnight; we visited him on Saturday, left him on Saturday night. His condition was worsening - inflamed legs, more lesions - and the vets didn't know what was going on. On Sunday morning, I went over around 7am. The vet tech on duty told me he hadn't slept or laid down all night. When I opened his little kennel, he collapsed into my arms and went right to sleep. I decided that I would not leave him for another instant. By now, he's on an IV and heavy antibiotics for possible tick transmitted diseases. This hospital was remarkable and let me stay overnight with him. We brought his bed from home, and I slept on the floor. On Monday night, he was even worse. He'd already had two blood transfusions, but the swelling was moving around his body. It was most pronounced on his right lip and left eye. He looked strange and we were very frightened. Because Nick had been on prednisone prior to this whole thing, we thought maybe he was allergic to it? The doctor proposed that we administer a large dose of prednisone at this point to save his life. We were faced with a terrible decision. What if he were allergic to the stuff? With a large dose, he would surely die. If we didn't give him the medicine, he would die. The doctors, all along, were convinced that this was NOT due to the prednisone, that this was a treatment for the type of symptoms Nicky had. I finally decided that since I didn't have a veterinary education, it would be best to yield to the doctor's orders. It saved his life. Within a day, he was vastly improved, two days - even better, and so on. He finally came home on Wednesday night, August 4th at 8 pm. Since then, he's been taken off the antibiotics as all testing results came back negative. What caused this? We'll never know for sure, but the consensus at the vet hospital is some sort of spider bite.

He has lost weight, and lost muscle mass, but our boy, just today, has finally begun to be more himself than he has been since all this happened. Our devoted dog walker even noticed it today. He's had two acupuncture treatments for leg cramping and spasms, and then muscle soreness. It has worked miracles! After last night's treatment, he actually ran up the stairs - a first in weeks. Usually both poodles act as though the stairway is the Indianapolis 500, so it's been hard to watch the little guy go up slowly.

I thank all those I asked for help - let this express my gratitude universally for getting my darling boy back. I've made myself sick over him being so close to leaving us. Ever listened to the song "Into the West" from the "Return of the King?" Watch those movies and I dare you not to drip a little tear...

I'm just glad he's back and safe in our little poodle family.

My first loose tea, and it was...interesting. I followed package instructions and added to 16 oz of water and tea, 8 ounces of milk. I've been adding only around 1/8 cup of milk, so one cup was too much. I had to drink it down and brew a bag in the remaining milky mixture and added more water. Better.

My first impression of the tea: gorgeous whole cloves, cardamom mingled with the black tea nuggets. It was beautiful! Tea bags don't afford a view of the tea, so this was my first visual of the tea itself. The aroma was scrumptious and inviting, spicy and sparky. Tomorrow I'll make the tea but not add so much extra milk. I liked the layered flavors, though. More when I have a better idea of brewing the way I like it...

Great tidbit - Rollinsford, New Hampshire is only miles from my home. I like purchasing from local companies! Same town as the company my worm bin worms come from!

Chai Tea / Yoga

I've sampled Chai tea - nearly all brands I could find in our area; I'm starting over with my tasting, but with comments about each one here. Today is fresh in my mind, so I'll get busy on that tea. Also, yoga has come to me at this point in my life, and I love it! Will b
e blogging that as well. Here we go!
Some of the versions I've tried and will get back to:

Gaeng Khae

Burning mouth - unbelievably too spicy hot. This Thai soup from Vegetarian Times Magazine sounded wonderful as a cold winter soup to warm up- ha! Not only will anything unwanted perish in my digestive system, so too will my internal organs!! Guess I should have known when the recipe called for four cups of veggie broth and 15 Japones Chiles. Duh.

If you're brave, give it a go...

Chili Paste:

Soup

Chili Paste:
  • Soak chiles in a bowl of boiling water 30 minutes. Drain, pat dry, and finely chop.
  • Combine garlic and salt in mortar, and pound with pestle (or food processor). Add lemongrass, shallots, miso and chiles, pounding and crushing after each addition to make a thick paste (or use food processor).

Soup:

Bring the broth to a boil in a saucepan over high heat. Stir in soy sauce and chile paste.
Add greens, fennel, and mushroooms, and bring to a boil. Cook 5 minutes. Reduce heat to medium low, and simmer 5 minutes. Add tofu, and cook 2 more minutes. Stir in arugula, mint and parsley. Simmer 1-2 minutes, or until herbs wilt. Enjoy and burn everything out!
